Whenever you walk past a table where they are shooting dice, you are going to see plenty of excitement, hear lots of shouting, laughter, and other noise. Because they are all betting against the house, the camaraderie is contagious…and exhilarating. When the fellow rolling the dice does well, so do all the players
Dice, commonly called craps, is an ancient game that predates the crusades. In the middle ages the game was called hazard, and was very popular in France and England. After that it spread to Asia, and by the 18th century had crossed the Atlantic to be played in the French colonies of Canada. From there it traveled to Louisiana, was called krebs, and gradually the pronunciation changed to craps.
The guy rolling the dice, is the person in control of the table. Actually he is the only player. Everyone else at the table is betting on what he does with the dice. There are two forms of the game, one being “Street Craps,” which is played on any surface anywhere, and the other being “Bank Craps,” which is played in all the casinos today.
Dice tables have both minimum and maximum betting limits. Some casinos that are off the strip, small, or geared toward the locals, have minimum bets as low as $2.00. Downtown, most of the casinos the minimum bet is $5.00, while the maximum is $1000.00. On the strip, they usually run with a $5000.00 maximum bet, but the minimum may change depending on the time of day or the season.
Technically, the casino can make set the limits any way they want. When a high roller is in town, special very high limits can be set upon request. If you are going to play craps, the best place to do it is in the casino you are most comfortable in….including service, betting limits and odds. |
